Spring Camp 2017

Posted on April 9th, 2017 by Steve McCarthy

This year our spring  camp took us on a cycling trip along the Kennet and Avon canal.

Starting from Devizes, we cycled to Bath and then on Sunday we cycled from Thatcham back to Emmer Green. Over 50 miles in total, so a great effort all round.

25 Scouts and 9 leaders had a great weekend and were blessed with some great sunshine and just a few punctures!

New Adult Volunteers Needed!

Posted on September 17th, 2016 by Steve McCarthy

3rd Reading is always on the look out for new adults volunteers. Can you help?

We especially need new leaders for our sections, but are a busy group, so we will hopefully have a section to meet your needs.

If you can’t commit to a regular evening , how about volunteering to be on our finance or building/grounds committee?

Please go to the contact us page to make contact with us.

Summer Camp 2016

Posted on August 29th, 2016 by Carl Gaskell

Phew!! What a week!
We’ve all just returned from our annual Summer Camp, this year held near Brecon in South Wales.

The Summer Camp is one of our favourite camps each year. It combines both the Scout and Explorer sections at 3rd Reading, and being a week long, provides us with plenty of premium activities and opportunities for fun.

This camp was no exception, with White Water Rafting, Caving, Gorge Walking, Air Rifle Shooting, a visit to (and under!) Ystradfellte Waterfalls, Swimming, Funfairs, beach BBQs, cooking competitions, and of course the ever-popular Party Night, which this year went with a ‘Bling’ theme.

This years camp was a ‘Green field’ camp, which was fabulous and really took us back-to-basics – just a tap on a farmers field for clean water, and a nearby stream to paddle in. We were under canvass for everything… including the bathrooms! But the Scouts and Explorers loved it, and as the weather was reasonably kind to us too, we had plenty time to enjoy the sun and the great outdoors.

And now for a well-earned summer break… see you in the Autumn!!

We are well on our way to our £1500 target

Many thanks to Youlbury Scout Activity Centre, the instructors and of course all the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers who will be abseiling.

Good luck everyone!

Cub Camp – June 2015

Posted on June 14th, 2015 by Carl Gaskell

This weekend, our Cubs enjoyed an amazing, action-packed weekend at the Youlbury Scout Campsite in rural Oxfordshire.

The weather was mixed, but it didnt stop the fun – they all got to cook on fires, go for hikes, learn team building skills, and take part in some great on-site activities.

Check out some of the great pictures below, and here’s to the next one!!

Scouts Easter Camp 2015

Posted on April 4th, 2015 by Carl Gaskell

This Easter, the 3rd Reading Scouts took a trip to Symonds Yat in the beautiful Wye Valley, for an action packed weekend Gorge Walking, Caving, Hiking, and Abseiling, before heading back via Bath for a swim at the leisure centre.

The weather wasn’t too kind for us, but as we spent most of the time in the water anyway, it really didn’t matter too much. And we had a lovely open fire back at the camp site to warm ourselves by – along with all the usual fun activities and party games.

We’re all certainly looking forward to the next camps – the 12.5 and Summer Camps later this year..

Scouts Winter Camp 2014

Posted on December 26th, 2014 by Carl Gaskell

This year’s Winter Camp took 45 of us to Downe Scout Activity Centre in Kent, where we all enjoyed a mixture of both on and off-site activities, in the bright, cold and crisp countryside.

Despite being quite short, it was a packed weekend, with Scouts taking part in a half day of Arial Trekking and Zip Wires, and a half day visit to the Scout Aviation Centre at Biggin Hill, looking at some of the old World War bunkers, getting up close and personal with some of the many aircraft onsite, and taking to the skies in the fabulous onsite SAC COMET 4 Flight Simulator. (Many thanks to the guys at Biggin Hill Scout Aviation Centre)

And of course to cap it all off, we had our Winter Camp Christmas Party with a full roast turkey dinner – and pudding, and an evening’s fun and games!

The following morning we packed up and left site, and traveled to Chislehurst, where we toured the vast underground Cave System by the light of old-fashioned oil lamps, before heading on back up the motorway to grab lunch and return home.

12½ & Over Camp 2014

Posted on May 9th, 2014 by Carl Gaskell

Each year around May/June time, the older Scouts get to go on a camp where we do something a little different. Last weekend was our 2014 trip, which this time took us to the Dorset coast, with the intention of going mackerel fishing on the high seas and cooking up a tasty meal with our hard-earned catches.

Alas, gale-force winds put paid Plan-A, and after a failure from Tescos to deliver our weekend food as well, we rapidly put Plan-B into action..

And so, with a hearty breakfast from a seaside cafe to start the day, and the sun slowly starting to shine, we all went crabbing (rather successfully!) off the coast of Swanage, followed by an 18-hole game of pitch and putt, and then over the chain-link ferry to go swimming at the fabulous water park, Splashdown, in Poole , before finally heading back to site and for a great evening BBQ.

After another overnight battering from the coastal winds, we again had to abandon plans for a cliff-top coastal ramble. But in true “Be Prepared” Scouting style, we switched again to Plan-B and all went for the day in Bournemouth, where we had a great walk along the beach, played on the funfair and in the Winter Gardens, and enjoyed some sightseeing in the local area, before crashing out in the minibus for the journey home.
