Cub Camp Summer 18

Posted on July 20th, 2018 by Steve McCarthy

The Crays Pond campsite near Goring was the fitting location for 3rd Reading’s 2018 Summer Cub Camp – originally founded in the 1920s, the picturesque location was the perfect setting for over 40 Cubs to discover some of the more traditional scouting skills, such as pioneering and camp fire cooking, as well as to become acquainted with a variety of more contemporary ones, such as circus skills and bicycle pump rocket blasting – perhaps not surprisingly, a firm favourite! Slathered in sun tan lotion to cope with tremendous weekend weather, the Cubs revelled in the camaraderie and the challenges. 2018 Summer Cub Camp was a tremendous experience for young and old hands alike.

Cubs win Dragon Boating Event

Posted on July 1st, 2018 by Steve McCarthy

It was a fabulous morning by the river, followed by a brilliant win at lunchtime. We were not sure whether we had won and had to wait for the photo finish to be checked.

The results were:

Race 1, Boat 3, Finish 2nd

Race 2, Boat 1, Finish 1st

Race 3, Semi Final, Boat 4, Finish 2nd

Race 4, Final, Boat 4, Finish 1st!

The Cubs adopted Woody, the dog, as their mascot and motivation for winning.

There were only 9 Cubs in the boat.

The organizers praised Reading 3rd especially, highlighting their behaviour, which was polite and attentive. That’s always good to hear.

Our London Adventure

Posted on June 4th, 2018 by Steve McCarthy

On a sunny weekend, 9 Scouts & Explorers headed up to the big smoke for some old fashioned exploration.

It was a busy itinerary, we camped in a gem of a Scout Campsite in Southall, on Friday evening we took advantage of camping near an Asian community & hit the food shops big time. What an amazing array of food.

Saturday was a long day, leaving our site, at 9am, we headed out for over 12hours of exploration.

1st up, a trip to Downing Street and get our all important pics in front of number 10.

The after a quick Tube ride, we headed to Tower Bridge and walked over, high up over the river.

After all that, well time for lunch. We wandered up to London Bridge and into Borough Market. It was crammed, but the food was worth it.

After lunch, it was time for a view, what better way to see London than up the Walkie Talkie building to see the views from the Sky Garden.

Well, its been full on so far, so now for some relaxation, we head to the Serpentine Lido. A great day for a dip.

Cubs success at District events

Posted on November 16th, 2017 by Steve McCarthy

Back in April, Thomas, Taine and Fred took on the challenge of our District Cooking Competition.

They fearlessly managed to cut their casserole vegetables without injury (mostly). Their fruit salad was delicious and they were an amazing team.

With little cooking  experience; working together carefully following instructions helped them to win and be District champions!

Then later the same term , our creative Cubs made an amazing effort for the autumn District Handicraft Competition. Parents, Leaders and Cubs all worked hard together to transform pasta, wooden spoons and shoe boxes into vampires, mummies, campsites and skeleton fish (and other animals). Our efforts were rewarded by becoming joint first, well done everyone.

Scouts & Explorers Night Hike

Posted on September 30th, 2017 by Steve McCarthy

Last night on a late September evening,  40 intrepid Scouts & Explorers completed a night hike from Emmer Green to Hurst.

Working in small groups, they survived a lot of mud on an otherwise mild evening.

Great progress was made completing the 9 miles in 3-4 hours. Given the ground underfoot all very impressive.

Thanks to Hurst Scouts for the use of their Scout HQ. With 28 scouts sleeping in your hall, I’ll leave it to your imagination how much sleep was had !
