Alas, Friday was our last day of camp. But after packing up, there was just enough time for one last activity – a round of crazy golf over in the Mumbles!
Then it was time for our return to Reading. And for the leaders – time for a rest!

Thursday brought us our last full day at camp. We were heading for a walk across to Worm’s Head – a small headland at Rhossili, and the furthest westerly point of the Gower Peninsula.
It gets cut-off from the mainland at high-tide, so we had to be sure of an early start.
With the weather staying so nice all week, the Scouts even got to see the local seals relaxing on the shoreline.
We had a brief rest from the walk at site, then headed down to Horton beach for a swim and a BBQ, before returning to camp for a quiz and games.
Day 5 was an early start – it was mountain biking first thing. And so, after a hearty breakfast, we headed to the Afan Forest for a ride up, down, around and over the many amazing trails.
At the same site, we found the Welsh Miners Museum. And so, after lunch, we explored the history of mining in South Wales, with private tours of the museum.
For the evening, we went to Porthcawl and to the funfare at Coney Beach, then over to McDonalds for dinner!
Tuesday marked the day of our Cooking Competition. This year, the theme was Ultimate Burgers and a fruit based desert. The Scouts were full of great ideas!
They broke into teams and came up with their menus, then headed out to the supermaket to buy their ingredients. On return, they built fires, chopped ingredients, and set to work.
The results were amazing – they tasted as good as they looked!
Then we all set off for an afternoon walk down to Three Cliffs Bay, taking in the many sights along the way.
On Monday – Day 3 of our camp – we were up bright and early to go Gorge Walking.
The afternoon took us to the Swansea LC2 leisure pool, with its wave machines, water rides, lazy rivers and jacuzzis.
For the evening, we relaxed by the campfire.

Sunday morning, the Scouts rose and cooked breakfast parcels on open fires, before heading offsite to spend the day surfing down at nearby Llangennith.
In the evening we all went for a coastal walk to see the sun setting over the water.
We started off early on Saturday morning, and traveled in convoy down to site, where we spent the afternoon setting up camp before heading out to the local beach and pier for a fish supper. What a way to start our week!
Back to Scouts Summer Camp 2024 On to Day 2
We’ve just returned from Scouts Summer Camp 2024 – a week in South Wales, and the first thing to say is Phew! What a scorcher – blue skies and blazing sun all week long!
This was perfect for the Scouts, as we were all under canvas at Moorlakes Wood campsite, near Swansea.

We are all just back from an incredibly busy week in the Gower.
A great set up with young people and Leaders meant for a really amazing week.
From beaches, to Coasteering and surfing there was definitely a coastal theme.
Other highlights included trips to Worms Head, cooking, swimming, Porthcawl fun fare and the end of camp Disco.
It seems everyone had a great week.
The Crays Pond campsite near Goring was the fitting location for 3rd Reading’s 2018 Summer Cub Camp – originally founded in the 1920s, the picturesque location was the perfect setting for over 40 Cubs to discover some of the more traditional scouting skills, such as pioneering and camp fire cooking, as well as to become acquainted with a variety of more contemporary ones, such as circus skills and bicycle pump rocket blasting – perhaps not surprisingly, a firm favourite! Slathered in sun tan lotion to cope with tremendous weekend weather, the Cubs revelled in the camaraderie and the challenges. 2018 Summer Cub Camp was a tremendous experience for young and old hands alike.
