Happy Birthday 3rd Reading Scout Group – 110 years old

Posted on September 10th, 2019 by Steve McCarthy

Happy Birthday 3rd Reading Scout Group!

This years marks the Group being 110 years old.

To celebrate, we had a Group family day on the Thames where our young members enjoyed a range of water sports including Raft Building, Kayaking, Paddle Boarding & Dragon Boats.

We were blessed with a lovely sunny day.

Thanks to all who made this happen.

Cubs Easter Camp 19

Posted on May 10th, 2019 by Steve McCarthy

Just hangin’ about. Yes, that’s what we were doing in Swindon for the Cub Easter Camp!  We had high winds but this didn’t put any of the Cubs off the high rope activities at PGL Liddington Activity Centre.  We had a weekend of fun on the Giant Swing, Abseiling, Vertical Challenge, Crate Challenge and Archery.  This was a great opportunity to complete activities we find difficult to do during normal sessions and have managed to work as a team learning new skills and make new friends. The accommodation at PGL is excellent.  It was a Residential Stay with en-suite facilities, a luxury which made for a comfortable nights sleep after a camp fire and songs.

Cub Camp Summer 18

Posted on July 20th, 2018 by Steve McCarthy

The Crays Pond campsite near Goring was the fitting location for 3rd Reading’s 2018 Summer Cub Camp – originally founded in the 1920s, the picturesque location was the perfect setting for over 40 Cubs to discover some of the more traditional scouting skills, such as pioneering and camp fire cooking, as well as to become acquainted with a variety of more contemporary ones, such as circus skills and bicycle pump rocket blasting – perhaps not surprisingly, a firm favourite! Slathered in sun tan lotion to cope with tremendous weekend weather, the Cubs revelled in the camaraderie and the challenges. 2018 Summer Cub Camp was a tremendous experience for young and old hands alike.

Cubs win Dragon Boating Event

Posted on July 1st, 2018 by Steve McCarthy

It was a fabulous morning by the river, followed by a brilliant win at lunchtime. We were not sure whether we had won and had to wait for the photo finish to be checked.

The results were:

Race 1, Boat 3, Finish 2nd

Race 2, Boat 1, Finish 1st

Race 3, Semi Final, Boat 4, Finish 2nd

Race 4, Final, Boat 4, Finish 1st!

The Cubs adopted Woody, the dog, as their mascot and motivation for winning.

There were only 9 Cubs in the boat.

The organizers praised Reading 3rd especially, highlighting their behaviour, which was polite and attentive. That’s always good to hear.

Cubs success at District events

Posted on November 16th, 2017 by Steve McCarthy

Back in April, Thomas, Taine and Fred took on the challenge of our District Cooking Competition.

They fearlessly managed to cut their casserole vegetables without injury (mostly). Their fruit salad was delicious and they were an amazing team.

With little cooking  experience; working together carefully following instructions helped them to win and be District champions!

Then later the same term , our creative Cubs made an amazing effort for the autumn District Handicraft Competition. Parents, Leaders and Cubs all worked hard together to transform pasta, wooden spoons and shoe boxes into vampires, mummies, campsites and skeleton fish (and other animals). Our efforts were rewarded by becoming joint first, well done everyone.

Parades, Trophies and Reptiles

Posted on November 12th, 2017 by Steve McCarthy

It has been a busy week at the 3rd.

Wednesday evening at Beavers, was only for the brave, tarantula’s, snakes and more reptiles came to visit one of our youngest sections. Judging by their gleeful faces there was no fear !

Wednesday and Friday saw the Scout section, performing their own remembrance evening by visiting the war memorials around Reading town centre and Caversham.

On Saturday night the 3rd Cubs & Scouts enter the District swimming gala. A fantastic evening was completed with the 3rd heading home with the winners trophies. Well done !! Great effort.

Finally to a sunny & cold Sunday morning, members of all sections joined the Caversham remembrance parade at Caversham War Memorial with young people from many other organisations.    Well done guys for representing the 3rd.

New Adult Volunteers Needed!

Posted on September 17th, 2016 by Steve McCarthy

3rd Reading is always on the look out for new adults volunteers. Can you help?

We especially need new leaders for our sections, but are a busy group, so we will hopefully have a section to meet your needs.

If you can’t commit to a regular evening , how about volunteering to be on our finance or building/grounds committee?

Please go to the contact us page to make contact with us.
