12.5 & over camp 2017

Posted on June 11th, 2017 by Steve McCarthy

Each year we run our 12.5 & over camp, aimed at the older Scouts and younger Explorers. It’s the chance to do something different.

This year we went to stunning Dorset and stayed at a great campsite just outside Wareham.

We headed out to Swanage on Saturday to take on some mackerel fishing. Sadly the team did not come back laden with fish, so we headed off to Tesco instead!

The crabbing was far more successful, but the huge one, taunted us and ultimately got away.

This was all followed by Football Golf – a new sport – and we all discovered new talents!

On the way home on Sunday, there was still plenty of time for a walk along the promenade from Alum Chime to Bournemouth.

Another great weekend, blessed with good weather.

Spring Camp 2017

Posted on April 9th, 2017 by Steve McCarthy

This year our spring  camp took us on a cycling trip along the Kennet and Avon canal.

Starting from Devizes, we cycled to Bath and then on Sunday we cycled from Thatcham back to Emmer Green. Over 50 miles in total, so a great effort all round.

25 Scouts and 9 leaders had a great weekend and were blessed with some great sunshine and just a few punctures!

Winter Camp 2016

Posted on January 2nd, 2017 by Steve McCarthy

As 2016 drew to a close, there was time to squeeze in one last camp.

This one was at Youlbury near Oxford.  Given the frost, all bar one brave sole opted for staying in one of their new buildings.

Activities were full-on for the whole weekend as usual, with wide games involving a lotta mud and making use of the sites many activities, including High Ropes, 3G Swing, climbing and an Aerial runway.

No winter camp is complete without a Xmas meal!

A good time was had by all.

New Adult Volunteers Needed!

Posted on September 17th, 2016 by Steve McCarthy

3rd Reading is always on the look out for new adults volunteers. Can you help?

We especially need new leaders for our sections, but are a busy group, so we will hopefully have a section to meet your needs.

If you can’t commit to a regular evening , how about volunteering to be on our finance or building/grounds committee?

Please go to the contact us page to make contact with us.

Sponsored Abseil at Youlbury

Posted on August 29th, 2016 by Steve McCarthy

It seems a long time ago now, but back in January, we completed our 24 hour sponsored abseil

Everyone was amazing, we had volunteers abseil from age 5 to age 70.

We survived, a never ending night, mud, so much mud, snow, ice, sun, rain, yes we had it all.

The guys and girls who abseiled through the night did amazingly well to keep it going.

It was all worth while , we made a total of £5k.

Well done !
